2013 in Reflection.

Hi Everyone. Today's post is the obligatory review of the year. Thanks to you all for reading and following my posts in the last few months on the blog. Has been quite fun for me to do posts and showcase my life and passions on here. This is a long one...

This year has been one of many changes and personal growth as well as business growth.

Magpie Calls:
This business of mine which started out purely as a hobby has grown into something which I am excited by,and which has soooo much potential. I have ideas coming out my ears and I have loved meeting new people at the I heart market, finding new avenues of creative outlet and making special creations that are unique and OOAK.

I have made some bellydance costumes, Have made many of my signature fabric flowers for fellow dancers, have made custom christmas and bridal decorations, necklaces, accessories and headwear are all adorning various people out there, and I eagerly await the moment when I can accost someone in the street with a "hey that's my creation you're wearing- I made that".

I am glad I started the blog. After a creative business workshop with Nadia Van der Mescht I could really focus on what I wanted my business to do and be like and I still have concepts and advice from that which will be implemented this next year. The blog is a way for me to visually see how I am doing and it keeps me focused on what clients want and how to connect with you all.

I have plans for next year going forward: new product lines and ranges, photo shoots, new sales outlets, more markets and just expanding and working on my brand as a whole (hopefully a brand revamp will happen this year).

I look forward to more custom creations,  new customers and fresh ideas.

Bellydance
This year I took over Dance Tribe officially and therefore all the teaching and choreography. It has been a challenge and an absolute joy. My students made me soooo proud this year and at our show and as a teacher I am grateful to have such wonderful students. We may be a teeny studio but I know we will work hard to produce quality dancing and dancers and that is my ultimate goal.

I have studied with some amazing teachers this year- Kami Liddle in April , Kristine Adams in November and Ioleen Lazenby the whole year. My soul has been fed by these ladies and I have so much to work on for myself and my students as a result. Awesome.

I went outside of my comfort zone and Benni and I entered Miss Bellydance SA (the tribal group category)- we wanted to show who we were, and the goal was not to win but to rather have the experience and just have a blast. We were so pleasantly surprised to be placed third and it was one of our year highlights.

For World Bellydance Day in May I once again took the organisational lead and together with the Belly Community of KZN we raised R9000 plus for The Open Air School with our hafla. Was such a lovely event and I am so proud of us all.

One of my highlights this year has been to start doing ATS® classes regularly with Ioleen and Left of Centre Dance. Our troupe "The Durban Tribal Collective" is so special to me because as tribal teachers in Durban Ioleen, Sam and I (and Benni) have bonded and are creating a really solid foundation of community for our students. That is so amazing to me. Can't wait to dance more with these ladies. We have some great friendships developing here and I love that Ioleen and I combined our studios to create an amazing showcase "Salmagundi"  of Tribal in KZN - we loved having Sam (and Kristine) joining us.One dance performance highlight was dancing ATS on the top of Sani Pass with the local Basotho people and muscians accompanying us. So special. And this included Heather from Tribal Angels in Joburg  and Kristine Adams as part of her world ATS tour.

Personally it has been the start of me seeing my own personal dance style emerging and I am excited to see where it goes. I am so grateful to my parents for helping me have a small home studio - it has made the world of difference to my classes and my own personal practice, and I know Studio Dance Tribe is going to be busy next year!

I can't wait to go back to Vegas and Tribal Massive again next year for more in-depth and intensive immersion into my passion of dance.

Personal:
I have had to learn time management, specially with 3 jobs. It is hard but totally worth it. I still get the disapproving looks from people who don't get that I have eschewed "normal jobs" to do what I do. It is hard, but trying to justify why you are following your passions and how long it actually takes to achieve things is sometimes too much for a quick visit or a passing convo in a shopping centre.

I have learnt this year that I am at an age where I want to have people in my life who actually want to be there. This may actually require effort from their side, it may mean we don't always agree,or see each other all that often, but that we have a connection and are invested in each other's lives. This goes for friends and family. I need to look after my own mental health and well-being and letting people affect that is not good for anyone. I may not always be exactly where I want to be in my life journey, but gosh I can have fun and meaningful relationships while there. I am grateful for all the new friendships I have made this year and the existing ones who have stayed the course. I look forward to some fun times in 2014.

This year has been great, thank you for being a small part of that.
Have a wonderful Christmas, new year and holiday season.
God Bless

much love and shimmies from me and 2013.

original image http://thefrugalgirls.com/sunday-coupon-preview

Hi Everyone. I will be updating the blog more regularly from now on, and to start us off a quick peak at a recent custom order. I have been making cute little decorations for Christmas (inspired by this bridal shower order ), including tiny mini hearts for present gift wrapping and tagging. At the I heart market in November I got an order for 22 red based hearts, which were to be hung on ribbon around bottle necks. A great idea, and I loved making them, My customer was happy when she received them.I love custom orders:D

I am currently working on another custom order with christmas pudding themed heart decorations... they are tooo cute, can't wait to show them to you when they are done.

thanks for reading, I love seeing my stats go up and people engaging with the content of the blog! I appreciate the support.

Ok Ok. I know I have been a bit AWOL lately, but I have good reasons.

My dance life has been crazy busy the last few weeks. We have been hosting the lovely and talented Kristine Adams on her Durban leg of her world tour, and so much entertaining and doing awesome things happened.

Also we have been preparing for our showcase with Left of Centre Dance : SALMAGUNDI. Many extra practices, crazy sewing hours (including some orders from fellow dancers) and preparations took up extra time. But it was alllll worth it... here is a pic of me with my beautiful Dance Tribe ladies backstage.

I plan on expanding on some of these adventures in future blog-posts so keep an eye out!

Tribal Takeover of Durban!

Hi Everyone,

This week's post is all about what is happening in my bellydance world this November. Some exciting events and happenings and some future blog-posts coming up as a result.

Firstly this coming weekend is our dress rehearsal for our studio showcase (more about that in a bit), so this week is practice and costume frenzy time. Our house looks like a fabric and textiles fairy puked up all over it :P hehe.

In the evening of the 16th we have been asked to dance in the Belly Diva's studio hafla. It is going to be fun because they have asked a few durban/kzn based studios as well as some other dance styles to perform - and we get to do an ATS™ number as well (only 2nd time ever). Dance Tribe will be doing a sneak peak by dancing one of our show numbers. The Divas are also donating for a good cause- toys for "Toys for joy/Toy story".

Next up are workshops with Kristine Adams of FatChanceBellydance™ in San Francisco. She is going around the world documenting ATS™ in every country and city she can. She spent a whole year on just South America. She has been in SA since Oct and has already done Joburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, we are next! YAY! Can't wait to learn from her. Check out her details and all about her journey here: From the Belly of a Traveler

Ok the big one we have been preparing for is our show "Salmagundi"- which we are doing in collaboration with "Left of Centre Dance" as both are small studios. We are so excited for it as it is both Ioleen and my first shows as directors of our studios and we have such variety of music and dancing that its sure to be a cracker. It has seriously been a breeze working together and organising everything as a team, plus we even choreographed a few pieces together and managed not to step on each-others toes. I am pretty stoked. We are honoured to have Kristine dancing in our show and also to have 3 out of 3 tribal teachers in Durban dancing TOGETHER on stage in the "Durban Tribal Collective ATS™ troupe". I think that's pretty special and amazing!
We are also raising money for Headway The KZN head injuries association. They do amazing work with accident victims and stroke patients.  We want to give them a BIG FAT donation so any support is appreciated. here is the link to get tickets : Salmagundi .

Hope to see some of you at these events and I need to get back to work and practice... so ..............

lots of love and shimmies

It's all in the Details Version 2

This week I wanted to share little teaser snippets of some of the costume items I have been working on for our show "Salmagundi" (get tickets here) on the 30th November. Silly season has hit and we are trying to be ready for our dress rehearsal on the 16th. Too much excitement in the Dance Tribe and Left of Centre camps at the moment.

So enjoy the details, and when we have our show images I will be sure to blog about it and show off the full costumes.

I love creating new costumes...  for myself and others. A few of these are not mine but commissions for fellow dancers.

Wedding Inspiration- Magpie Calls Pretties.

Hello lovelies.

This week's post was meant to be done last week, but being overwhelmed by sickness meant it was delayed. I am all better now and want to celebrate the engagement of my good friend  B by doing a post that is wedding related. Over the last year and a bit I have created some pieces which can be used for weddings. Either by the bride or by bridesmaids or flower girls. The following pics are some of the creations which I feel would work well for weddings (including my handmade and constructed bouquets with fabric flowers). There are head-dresses, bracelets, brooches or clips, sashes and bouquets.

Enjoy and let me know if there are other items which would be wonderful for a wedding range (I am slowly working towards making a full range for boutiques and such). Also B has said she wants me to make her a wedding fascinator, I am sooooooo excited!

Each flower is made by me, and the entire bouquet is made from scratch , the red and white bouquet is out with a fellow crafter for promotions, will get it back and take proper pics soon.

Fascinators and hair sashes, all handmade and beaded by me.

Flower crown, cuff and hair clips- perfect for the bride or bridesmaids.

Sashes are a lovely way to give a personal spin to a simple wedding or bridesmaid dress. It can be co-ordinated to the flowers or the wedding colours, or with the wedding dress tones  for interest. They can be as simple or ornate as you want!

Well Congrats to my friends B and D and I hope they enjoy their engagement and have fun planning their special day!

Inspiration- October 2013

Since I am currently sick in bed and don't have the energy to work on the blog post I originally wanted to put up today I will be doing an inspiration post on what is inspiring me at the moment. The original post will be up next week;)

So enjoy , use the comment box below to tell me what is inspiring YOU lately.

BODY ARMOUR:

I love the idea of modern Armour with vintage or ancient touches to it, so it can be worn in a modern way. I think Olivia Kissel (top left) is the Queen of this look, and her pieces are so versatile and can be worn in so many ways, specially if you are  a dancer.

BEADED DRESSES:

I am loving dresses which are heavily beaded and have texture and detail. They are beautiful and inspire me to be a better beader and more detail orientated in my work. I love that you can find both modern and vintage examples of this, and sometimes modern dresses with vintage inspired detailing! YUM!

CROWNS:

I love these takes on crowns, yes they may be over the top but who wouldn't want to be a Princess and rule with these on their heads?

Pic Credits:

Silver crown
Gold crown

GOTHIC RED RIDING HOOD:

This has been inspiration for my solo  for our end of year showcase. You will have to wait and see what I do and what I look like in it! But black and red is the predominant theme.

So those are just some of the things which are on my "muse" board lately. Hope you are inspired yourselves!

Thrifting Fun- Second Treasures

Today's post is a collection of pics I took at the second hand store in Hillcrest called Second Treasures. A regular smorgasbord (don't you just love that word?) of bits and bobs, old and really old, nostalgia, pre-loved, upcycled and interesting stuff. Filled to the brim, you really have to spend time looking at the nooks and cranny's to make sure you don't miss out on some hidden treasure.

I love places like this, that make you feel like you are on a treasure hunt, and that every item has a story. So enjoy my pics and make sure to go and check it out yourself. They also fix up old furniture so if you have a few pieces that need a new lease on life be sure to check them out!

Fabulous right?
