"Portals" - Art Exhibition inspiration

This week I was honoured to open an amazing exhibition here in Durban at the ArtSPACE Durban Gallery. "Portals" showcases the artistic talents of three Durban artists : Di Van WykOckert Kruger and Sharon McClelland.

The idea behind the exhibition is what makes it unique (at least here in South Africa), taking a theme, finding images/photos that represent that theme, and then each artist does their own interpretation on each image. Using a variety of mediums (painting, print-making drawing and mixed-media) these artists produced an incredible show. Was very interesting to see how they each brought their own ideas and stylistic voice to the show.

Now you may be wondering what this has to do with making sparkly accessories and costumes? Well when I opened the exhibit I made mention of how in a day and age where everyone has a pinterest account and can google overseas artists, and where appropriation rather than inspiration is the order of the day, these artists show that we can all have the same source of inspiration, but produce creative products that are "us", we can still keep our unique voice and not resort to "copying" other's style, creativity, technique etc. I think this is so important for any creative to remember and be vigilant about- you want your clients to know your style when they see it, not wonder who and where it comes from. Integrity is important everywhere!

Ok so enough with the lecture, bring on the pictures.
